Introducing Angélla Christie: Breaking Barriers as a Gospel Saxophonist
In the realm of gospel music, female musicians are a rare sight, and a female gospel saxophonist is even rarer. However, Angélla Christie shattered the musical glass ceiling with her extraordinary talent and passion for the saxophone.
Born to missionary parents in Los Angeles on February 19, 1963, Christie spent her formative years on the road, attending various Pentecostal churches. While her dream was initially to become a rock guitarist, her parents only allowed sacred music to be played at home. At the age of 14, armed with a saxophone purchased from a pawn shop, Christie was encouraged to play a hymn before a church congregation. The overwhelming response from the audience made her realize that her true calling was to interpret church hymns and gospel songs on the saxophone.
Upon graduating from Houston Baptist University in 1985, Christie founded Angélla Christie Sound Ministries in Atlanta. That same year, she recorded her first EP, “Because He Lives,” featuring four tracks. This marked the beginning of several independently released albums where Christie skillfully blended smooth jazz with hymns and sacred songs, with the saxophone taking the lead.
In Christie’s hands, the saxophone becomes a fully formed gospel singer, capable of expressing a wide range of human emotions, much like a Hammond B3 organ in the hands of a gifted church organist. Adding to her uniqueness among her peers, Christie performs shoeless on stage, further distinguishing herself as a captivating artist.
In 1996, Christie’s sax appeal gained national recognition when she signed with Atlanta International Records (AIR) and released her album “Eternity.” The album, which also had a video release, featured a funky rendition of “Farther Along” and a soul-stirring sax solo on “Amazing Grace.” It sold an impressive 30,000 copies, propelling Christie into the spotlight and securing her appearances on major platforms such as the Church of God in Christ Convocation, the Gospel Music Workshop of America, the Bishop T.D. Jakes Woman Thou Art Loosed Conference ’97, and the National Baptist Convention USA, where she had the honor of performing before President Bill Clinton.
